Lyon and Milan: A Strategic Corridor for Industrial Investment in Europe
In a European context shaped by reindustrialization, innovation, and economic sovereignty, collaboration between Lyon and Milan is emerging as a strategic lever for companies seeking to scale. Initiated by ONLYLYON Invest, a business mission held from May 20 to 22, 2026, helped concretely structure this connection between two major European industrial hubs, laying the groundwork for a high-value investment corridor across the Alpine region.
A European initiative serving industry and innovation
Held in Milan, this mission is part of a broader strategy to strengthen visibility and deepen collaboration with high-potential European markets. Its objective is to accelerate economic cooperation between Lyon and Milan around key strategic priorities: industry, innovation, attractiveness, and international development.
As part of this initiative, ONLYLYON Invest mobilized a business delegation and engaged in high-level exchanges with key stakeholders from the Lombardy ecosystem.
A business program tailored to European investors and companies
At the core of the mission, ONLYLYON Invest deployed a structured program designed to maximize cooperation and investment opportunities between the two territories. Designed as a comprehensive business activation platform, it was built around three complementary pillars:
1. A strategic workshop for European investors
Nearly 50 Lombardy-based executives and companies took part in a dedicated business workshop designed to:
- showcase the Lyon region as a strategic base for expansion in Europe
- highlight sector-specific opportunities in industry, cleantech, healthcare, and innovation
- share real-life success stories of companies already established in the region
This format enabled direct engagement with companies actively considering their European expansion strategy.
2. Targeted B2B meetings to foster industrial partnerships
Focused meetings were organized with Italian companies to:
- identify investment projects
- initiate industrial and technological partnerships
- connect the economic ecosystems of the two metropolitan areas
This business dimension was enhanced by an immersive approach through a “learning expedition,” enabling participants to engage with key institutional and industry players such as Milano & Partners, Assolombarda, the Borsa Italiana, and MADE 4.0, a leading center of excellence dedicated to Industry 4.0.
Visits to flagship sites, including the Milano Innovation District (MIND) and the Porta Nuova district, provided a concrete understanding of Milan’s models of innovation, urban transformation, and economic attractiveness.
3. Mobilizing economic and institutional networks
The mission helped activate key economic networks across both regions to structure long-term cooperation between Lyon and Milan.
ONLYLYON Invest relied on strategic partners on the Milan side (Milano & Partners, Assolombarda, chambers of commerce), while also engaging key Lyon-based stakeholders in the delegation, including the Lyon Chamber of Commerce (CCI Lyon Métropole Saint-Étienne Roanne) and Lyon Place Financière.
These exchanges provided valuable insights into the Milan model, characterized by strong public-private coordination to accelerate innovation, investment, and international business development. They contributed to:
- identifying local partners to support Lyon-based companies entering the Italian market
- connecting with structured Lombard industrial networks
- opening new sector-based collaborations in industry, finance, and innovation
Interactions between Lyon Place Financière and Milan-based actors, particularly around Borsa Italiana, also enabled exploration of synergies in financing and access to capital markets at the European level.
This cross-activation of ecosystems lays the foundation for a structured Lyon–Milan economic axis capable of attracting and supporting international investment projects.
Why Lyon and Milan are complementary industrial hubs
Lyon and Milan share strong fundamentals: industrial excellence, world-class research, and well-structured innovation ecosystems. Their complementarities create a unique value proposition for companies:
- Milan as a highly connected economic and financial hub
- Lyon as a high-performance industrial and technological platform for scaling in Europe
Key indicators highlight this complementarity:
- €80 billion GDP for the Lyon metropolitan area vs. €200 billion for the Milan region
- 1.4 million inhabitants in each city, over 3 million at the metropolitan scale
- 191,000 students in Lyon and approximately 200,000 in Milan, supporting innovation capacity and talent development
- Strong regional economies: 12% of French GDP for Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, 22% of Italian GDP for Lombardy
Both cities excel in strategic sectors such as chemicals and cleantech, health and biotech, industrial AI, and sustainable mobility, key industries for Europe’s future.
This complementarity is fully embodied in the Lyon–Turin–Milan corridor, at the heart of the European Alpine region, one of the continent’s major economic axes:
- a direct rail connection of approximately 4h30 between Lyon and Milan
- a corridor set to strengthen further with the future Lyon–Turin link
This corridor transforms complementarities into a concrete competitive advantage, facilitating industrial flows, investments, and talent mobility across Europe.
An attractive innovation ecosystem for European companies
Through this mission, ONLYLYON Invest highlighted the Lyon region’s key strengths:
- a competitive environment with controlled costs
- a leading industrial and technological ecosystem
- a strong talent pool, with 191,000 students and 13,000 researchers within a highly connected academic ecosystem
- strong sectors: biotech, cleantech, advanced manufacturing, AI
Together, these assets position the Lyon region as a true European “Impact Factory”, combining industry, innovation, and sustainability to support business growth.
Why European companies choose Lyon for expansion
Thanks to its strategic location at the heart of Europe, Lyon provides international companies with an ideal environment to accelerate their European growth. The region combines industrial excellence, technological innovation, logistics connectivity, and access to talent, enabling investors to scale their activities efficiently from France to European markets.
